I have been looking for a different racing game when I came across Project Cars. I have heard both good things and bad things about it but shit it was only $20, I couldn’t resist! What do you guys think, good purchase or will I get bored fast?

Depends. PC should be fine. The Console versions are absolute garbage. Plus it doesn’t really work with a controller.

I have it for PS4 with a Fanatec GT3 RS wheel, and it is fantastic. However yesterday I got Dirt Rally and my life is now complete again.

I'm probably not going to buy a wheel and stuff, how realistic is it? Is the damage from crashing realistic?

In fairness they might of fixed the games faults (and there were a shit ton of them) by now but given the way the devs repeated insulted console players, I would be surprised if they did.

My top tips. Avoid karts and turn all of the graphical features you can because the frame rate gets messy at times.

I think the damage is great, everyone has an opinion. I tend not to notice as much as I try to keep it out of the wall. There is a fair amount of fine tuning as any racing game. I have plenty of info if you need fine tuning.

I enjoy it, but I have it on PC not sure how similar the console versions are.

I have it on PC and I play it every week for a couple hours, I love it. I use a 360 controller and it works fine. At first it’s hard as shit, though, but keep at it and you learn how the car works. I play the career mode, with practice and qualifying and all that jazz - it’s great fun if you do it that way. I played the first “season” without ever restarting a race or qualifying but I finished last that way, which meant I got no offers from other racing series, and now I have to race another whole season with the same shitty Clio.

+ Each car has a genuine sound. In other games that is also implied, but you can always somehow tell that they created the sound the same way. Here it’s different, even at idle all the cars are hugely different. Same goes for the handling.

+ The handling. This is a simulator, so it’s very difficult. Having cold tires greatly affects your performance. The rain is a bitch for visibility, as well as handling.

+ There’s a damage model. Both functional and visual.

+ If your rig can handle it, the graphics are freaking amazing. The way the rain bounces off your windshield, or how the exhaust spits flames... Great stuff.

+ Lots of tracks. Whatever you want, it’s here. Any weather or time of day.

+ Lots of cars. Not much old street cars though, which are my favorite (there’s a couple of old BMWs, the Merc Red Pig and an Escort, I believe)... There’s a bunch of open wheeled racers, though.

+ There are headlight and wipers toggles. It’s common in games like GTA, but rarely seen in racing games.

+ Even though only one of 20 identical cars has the original paint scheme and sponsors, the rest of the liveries are done remarkably well and period correct. Being a graphic designer, I appreciate details like that.

- Even though I’m having fun now, I don’t know how long the game will keep me interested. I tend to give up on racing games as soon as I reach the high-speed endourance cars or open-wheeled racers. I find that stuff boring, but that’s obviously subjective.

- A couple niggles: on some cars, when you rub someone on the side, your car tends to fly in the air and roll, all a bit too exaggerated, ruining your race. Can be annoying, especially because you know it’s not your fault but the games.

- No handbrake, wtf???

8/10, would play for a couple hours a week/month

I bought it at release, and stopped playing it because I was so frustrated with it. However, i picked it back up about a month ago and its like a different game. So many of the bugs have gone, and the handling is more predictable, and importantly, repeatable. So I am currently working my way through a GT3 euro championship.

One of the first things id suggest do is change the controller settings, buried somewhere in the menus. Some settings that I found that made a big difference: https://www.reddit.com/r/PS4/comments…

FWIW I don’t have PSN, so only play career mode, and found that once i stopped doing every race, and for the races that were invitations, not my main career, id just skip practise and Quali and start last on low difficulty. The for career up difficulty and race length and do all the sessions.

So partly the game has improved, and partly I changed how I played it, and found it to be a very enjoyable game.

I have it on Steam.

The cars look nice but everything else leaves a lot to be desired. Not a lot of cars, but a decent amount of tracks. Unless you’re playing with a nice racing wheel, you’ll probably get bored.

Its a good game though the AI can be a bit dumb at times. Playing with a controller on the default settings is awful though. Here’s the settings that I use:

Steering deadzone 10

Steering sensitivity 10

Throttle deadzone 10

Throttle sensitivity 5

Brake deadzone 0

Brake sensitivity 20

Clutch deadzone 10

Clutch sensitivity 45

Speed sensitivity 50

Controller filtering sensitivity 45

Force feedback 80

RPM/Gear display yes

Controller input mode 3

Advanced on

Soft steering dampening on

Visual wheel filtering on

Opposite lock help off

The handling. This is a simulator, so it’s very difficult. Having cold tires greatly affects your performance. The rain is a bitch for visibility, as well as handling.

Don’t forget about cold brakes. I’m running an LMP2 in the endurance championship and you cant stop at all until your temps are above 500C.

Your right, the default settings are shit. I could barely make it around the track without spinning off! I changed it to the settings you have and I worked much better. I still gotta tweak it alittle more to my liking but overall this is a really good setting.

I am still fine tuning it to try to get it so that I can actually catch a slide.

It is definitely much harder of a racing game than I am used to. When I used to play the F1 games I could set the car up relatively easily but in Project cars their is so much different stuff to mess with IDK if I am making the car better or worse!
